E-learning has become an integral part of the curriculum at many universities worldwide. This work presents a contribution to the collection of virtual translation seminars offered at the University of Heidelberg. In the first part, an overview of the modern translator's working environment is provided, followed by a description of several electronic and Internet-based tools of interest to language professionals. Subsequently, e-learning in its many different varieties and its implementation in different countries is presented. The complete virtual seminar is included, following a brief chapter outlining the topic of the virtual seminar, immigration to the United States. The seminar consists of a study guide for future students and six class units. Every unit deals with a different aspect of immigration to the United States and contains source and parallel texts as well as model solutions to the different tasks, including abstracts, linguistic analysis, terminology lists, collocation lists, glossaries, research tasks and the translation itself.
