This volume contains the proceedings of a conference organised by the Centre for British Studies at Berlin's Humboldt University on "the Future of the Welfare State" that gave senior figures from government, academia and the media an opportunity to discuss and compare British and German views, and to look at options for future policies. This participants tried to determine the reasons for the current crisis of the welfare and social security systems in European countries, such as demographic trends, changes in the patterns of employment or the breakdown of the traditional gender order leading to new family patterns. Then they discussed the essential problem of how to finance and manage welfare in the future. The principal themes were presented in an open public forum, and then explored in more detail in panel discussions. Conference languages were German and English. The conference was the second in a series on current public policy issues relevant to Germany, Britain and more widely for Europe.

Dieser Band dokumentiert den Verlauf einer Konferenz am Großbritannien-Zentrum der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin über "die Zukunft des Sozialstaates". Führende Persönlichkeiten aus Regierung, Wissenschaft und Medien hatten die Gelegenheit zum Vergleich britischer und deutscher Ansichten zur Diskussion über die Möglichkeiten politischer Lösungsansätze. Die Hauptthemen wie demographische Trends, Entwicklung der Arbeitsmarktstrukturen, Zusammenbruch der traditionellen Geschlechterordnung sowie Organisation und Finanzierung des Sozialsystems in der Zukunft wurden jeweils in einem Forum vorgestellt und danach eingehender in einer Podiumsdiskussion erörtert. Konferenzsprachen waren Englisch und Deutsch. Die Veranstaltung ist Teil einer Reihe von Konferenzen mit dem Ziel, aktuelle politische und kulturelle Probleme, die sowohl für Deutschland und Großbritannien als auch für Gesamteuropa von Bedeutung sind, anzusprechen und zu diskutieren. Das Großbritannien-Zentrum wurde dabei vom British Council und der Anglo-German Foundation unterstützt.
