Der Band vereinigt Beiträge (auf Deutsch und Englisch), die auf dem Workshop in Metochi auf Lesbos vom 26. bis 31. Mai 2006 vorgetragen wurden. Der Schwerpunkt lag auf Modalität und Grammatikalisierung. Das Treffen war das sechste in einer Reihe von Workshops, von denen fünf bereits in Publikationen ihren Niederschlag fanden (vgl. die Fokus-Bände 23, 25 und 29). Modalität ist ein wichtiger semantisch-pragmatischer Bereich, der in den letzten Jahrzehnten mehrfach untersucht worden ist, wobei auch morphosyntaktische Mittel zum Ausdruck von Modalität analysiert wurden. Behandelt werden in diesem Band Modalverben, Modalpartikeln und der Konjunktiv (inkl. Konditional) im Deutschen, Lettischen, Polnischen, Litauischen, Norwegischen und Englischen. Behandelt wird auch visuelle Modalität, ein Bereich, der in der bisherigen Literatur zur Modalität noch kaum beschrieben wurde. Die Beiträge gliedern sich in die Bereiche 1) Morphologie, Syntax und Semantik der Modalverben, 2) Modalpartikeln, 3) Konjunktiv (inkl. Konditional) und 4) Visuelle Modalität.

This volume unites contributions (in German and English) that were presented to the Modality Workshop organized by Agder University College/Norway in Metochi on the Greek Island of Lesbos from May 26 to 31, 2006. The topical emphasis was on modality and grammaticalization. The meeting was the sixth in a series of workshops, five of them resulting in publications (cf. vols. 23, 25 and 29 of Fokus). Modality is an important semantic-pragmatic area, which has been thoroughly investigated during the last few decades, including the morphosyntactic means used to express modality. In this volume, modal verbs, modal particles and the subjunctive (including the conditional) in German, Latvian, Polish, Lithuanian, Norwegian and English are treated. In addition, the area of visual modality, which has so far hardly been treated in the literature on modality, is addressed in two of the contributions. The volume is divided into the sections 1) Morphology, syntax and semantics of modal verbs, 2) Modal particles, 3) Subjunctive (including conditional) and 4) Visual modality.
