It-Narratives in Anglophone Contemporary Literature

In the 18th and 19th centuries, a certain genre was popular in Britain: it-narratives. In it-narratives, an animal or an inanimate object like a coin, pin, or banknote is turned into a protagonist – and sometimes a narrator – and followed as it moves across space and time, affecting animate and inanimate agents alike. The last decades have witnessed the emergence of what can be referred to as a ‘new generation’ of it-narratives. Contemporary Anglophone novels exhibit a preoccupation with objects and the material world. Some of them share striking features with traditional it-narratives of the 18th and 19th centuries. Often, one object is the main object which acts as the narrator, guides and structures the story or serves as the axis around which other characters’ stories spin while moving in the world and being given from hand to hand. This study focuses on analysing the role, function and meaning of human-made, mobile objects in these contemporary Anglophone novels and examining what forms the relationship between subjects and objects takes. As humans and objects are connected through stories and storytelling, this book investigates how the relationship between subjects and objects is constituted through stories and storytelling. By discarding a purely human-centric perspective on the world and turning the attention to objects to account for the inanimate, this study wants to make visible the interactions and interdependencies of objects and humans. The Historical Female Scientist in the Contemporary Anglophone Biographical Novel. Reimagining the Lives of Mary Anning, Caroline Herschel, Mileva Marić, and Ada Lovelace through the Lens of Literature

With a few exceptions, our view of the history of science has often focused solely on great men. In recent years, however, there has been an increasing “rediscovery” of female scientists and their often little-known or forgotten achievements. The present book is dedicated to this current development, also known as “herstory.” It shows that the genre of biographical fiction (i.e. the fictionalized representation of a historical person’s life) plays an important role in this rewriting that now includes and highlights the perspectives of women. In examining the depiction of female scientists in selected novels and analyzing the ways in which historical fact and fictional privilege intertwine in the portrayal of their biographies, this study reveals the genre’s potential for telling women’s life stories but also points to the stereotypical images and myths (re-)emerging despite the narratives’ avowed revisionist agendas. Gewalt ist ein aktuelles und auf vielfältige Weise bearbeitetes Forschungsthema, das jedoch hinsichtlich des biologischen und sozialen Geschlechts der Handelnden auf ganz unterschiedliche Weise rezipiert wird. Dabei gelten Männer fast ausnahmslos als Täter und Frauen hauptsächlich als deren Opfer. Dieser simplifizierten Wahrnehmung setzt der Sammelband aus einer altertumswissenschaftlichen Perspektive ein differenzierteres Bild entgegen. So kennt die griechische und römische Historiographie zahlreiche Heerführerinnen, die auch auf dem Schlachtfeld mitkämpften. Juristische Text berichten von gewalttätigen Frauen in alltäglichen Situationen. In archäologischen Befunden sind Waffen zwar vorrangig mit Männern assoziiert, doch gibt es in Bestattungen eine signifikante Minderheit von als weiblich bestimmten Individuen mit kriegerischen Ausrüstungen. Zum Neujahrstag des Jahres 1609 beschenkte der damalige kurfürstlich-sächsische Historiker Hieronymus Megiser (1557-1619) den elfjährigen Johann Philipp von Sachsen-Altenburg (1597-1639), Sohn des Herzogs von Sachsen-Weimar, mit einer spannenden Abhandlung über die Insel Madagaskar. Von dieser Insel wurde damals angenommen, sie sei die größte Insel der Erde und Heimat legendärer Fabelwesen. Gestützt auf italienische, portugiesische und holländische Quellen berichtet der Universalgelehrte Megiser seinem Zögling ausführlich über den damaligen Wissensstand zur Insel Madagaskar, ihre Lage, die Flora und Fauna, die dort lebenden Menschen und deren Geschichte sowie über die bisherigen Entdeckungsfahrten der Europäer. Hier liegt nun erstmals eine Übertragung des Originals von 1609 ins moderne Hochdeutsch vor, versehen mit über 200 gründlich recherchierten Anmerkungen mit Erläuterungen zu Personen, Orten, Geschichte sowie Flora und Fauna Madagaskars und Megisers historischen Quellen ...

In his Enquiry Concerning Political Justice (1793), published only a few days after the guillotining of King Louis XVI of France, English philosopher and political thinker William Godwin openly criticizes oppressive governments that inhibit social progress by suppressing rational discourse and morality. While Political Justice shaped the Revolution Debate of the 1790s, Godwin’s texts, and especially the novels published after his stellar success Caleb Williams, often remain overlooked despite their innovative fusions of fact and fiction. Located at the crossroads of history and literary imagination, Godwin’s novels present fictional case studies grounded in both the realities of the novels’ settings and the philosopher’s contemporary Britain, which offer powerful commentary on the pressures exerted over citizens in systems of patriarchal oppression. Female Scientists at Risk. The Representation of Career Challenges in Contemporary U.S. American Science Novels

To date, women are underrepresented in the natural sciences in real life, as well as in most science-related media. Through the emergent genre of science novels, readers can enter the world of science and come to understand its mechanisms of knowledge production, inclusion, and exclusion. This thesis examines the representation of the ever-evolving challenges for female scientists in contemporary U.S. American fiction. Specifically, it seeks to ascertain in how far the presented risks are gender- and career-specific. For this purpose, the study operates with a corpus of eight science novels published between 1993 and 2019 by authors with and without a background in science.
